SUMMARY:Understanding the Attackers
DESCRIPTION:The internet is an amazing place\, without it we’d have been utterly lost over the past few years. It lets us stay close to our loved ones far away\, make the most amazing friends\, learn the most fascinating things\, and buy the most esoteric goodies we can think of. But it has a dark side\, and and the only way to stay safe is to understand the threat — who’s out to get you\, what do they want\, and how are they trying to get it? The technical minutia change all the time\, but who the baddies are and what motivates them changes surprisingly little. Believe it or not\, each and every one of us has something of value to the baddies\, so we all need some digital street-smarts to help us steer clear of trouble! \n\n\n \nAre you a member? Log in to view the entire video. Not a member? Join today!\n\nSummary\nThis summary was written by AI and may contain inaccuracies. \nCybersecurity and Resource Sharing at NMUG Meeting \nMike welcomed everyone to the Nmug meeting and highlighted the availability of resources on the Nmug website\, including meeting notes. Upcoming meetings were announced\, including one with Mike Mathews and another aimed at beginners to understand the message board better. bart\, a cybersecurity expert from Maynuth University in Ireland\, presented on how to stay ahead of cyber threats. He emphasized the importance of not panicking and the power individuals hold in ensuring their safety. He referred to a Microsoft report that highlighted the significance of basic measures in keeping one safe. bart also mentioned the existence of five business-related aspects that would be revisited later to translate technical aspects into simpler terms. \nCybersecurity Threats and Defense Strategies \nBart stressed the importance of understanding potential threats in the realm of cybersecurity. He noted that cybercriminals\, primarily driven by profit\, target individuals’ financial resources\, cryptocurrency\, data\, accounts\, and computer resources. He suggested that the best defense is to make oneself unappealing to hackers by not being an easy target. While nation-state actors were acknowledged as a significant threat\, they were not highlighted as the primary concern for most people. bart also discussed the tactics used by cybercriminals to generate profit\, including trickery and extortion\, and explained the lengths to which they might go to take over targets’ devices. He emphasized the need for awareness and alertness to protect oneself and one’s technology. \nVigilance\, Rationality and Digital Literacy for Defense \nbart stressed the importance of vigilance and rationality in defending against potential threats\, emphasizing the value of digital literacy and deliberate\, informed choices. He introduced the concept of following the money as a way to identify potential problems and cautioned against deals that seem too good to be true. bart also warned against emotional manipulation by scammers and advised vigilance in identifying red flags in communications. He emphasized the importance of staying rational and not rushing into decisions\, as once our logic is off\, our shields are down. \nCybersecurity: Beware of Suspicious Emails and SMS Messages \nbart stressed the importance of caution when dealing with suspicious emails or SMS messages claiming to be from financial institutions. He warned against giving out personal information or passwords and advised individuals to be aware of red flags such as anomalous language\, grammar\, and knowledge. bart also emphasized the importance of good digital hygiene\, advocating for the use of a password manager and two-factor or multi-factor authentication. He explained the hierarchy of different methods of two-factor authentication\, preferring hardware tokens and push notifications with number matching over push notifications without number matching and SMS messages\, which he considered the weakest option. He concluded that length is more important than complexity for passwords and that they alone are not enough for security. \nOnline Account Management: Bart’s Guidelines \nbart discussed the importance of managing online accounts and passwords. He emphasized the need to avoid creating accounts where they are not needed\, to use different accounts for personal and work activities\, and to delete unused accounts to prevent them from being easily hacked. bart also cautioned against using social media accounts for sign-in and recommended using Apple or Google accounts instead. He further stressed the significance of using two-factor authentication\, having backups\, and not sharing more data than necessary. Lastly\, bart emphasized the need to take care of one’s iCloud account and to be careful with personal data such as government IDs and credit card numbers. \nSoftware Updates and Protection \nbart emphasized on the importance of regularly updating software and operating systems\, and the dangers of using outdated software that is no longer protected by updates. He advised not to turn off built-in protections in modern operating systems and to use antivirus programs on Macs. He also warned against pirating software\, as it is often riddled with malware\, and instead suggested obtaining software from trusted sources. bart stressed the importance of being vigilant and not installing anything that is not needed\, and to seek advice from trusted sources when unsure. \nPassword Security and Protection \nbart and Chita discussed the safety of passwords and online security. bart advised that everyone’s usernames and passwords have likely been stolen at some point. He suggested using short but complex passwords\, and not reusing them across multiple accounts. Rob shared his concern about the security of Apple passwords and asked for advice on protecting his iPhone. bart suggested using a shorter\, but complex letters-only password\, and enabling the feature that locks the phone after multiple failed attempts. Chita mentioned an option that requires a second passcode for security. In the end\, Hank asked about the growing list of websites and companies that are starting to work with pass keys\, with bart confirming that Amazon recently joined this initiative. \nFeature Development & Digital Literacy Discussions \nbart and Hank discussed the current phase of a feature that is still not fully developed. bart suggested that in a few months\, it would be easier to provide simple answers regarding this feature. Rick asked for bart’s recommendations on antivirus programs\, to which bart suggested Intergo\, a Mac antivirus that seems technically very good. bart also clarified to Gill that antivirus is not applicable for iPhones in the same way it is for computers due to Apple’s security measures. Finally\, bart touched on digital literacy\, emphasizing the importance of understanding domain names and the padlock icon in web browsers. He also mentioned the misunderstood use of badges on social media. \nIdentifying Apex Domain in Urls and Emails \nbart emphasized the significance of identifying the ‘apex domain’ in web addresses\, commonly known as Urls. He cautioned against Urls that include the apex domain after the first forward slash or within the question mark\, which could be deceptive and potentially lead to malicious sites. He also explained the process of identifying the correct domain name in an email address\, noting that the part to the left of the “@” symbol is irrelevant\, while the rightmost part of the domain name is what should be examined. bart also discussed a trick used by some to intentionally misplace expected information\, which he described as proactively malicious. \nOnline Safety: Understanding URLs\, Emails\, MFA\, and Trust Principles \nbart emphasized on the importance of understanding how URLs and email addresses work to keep oneself safe online. He highlighted the significance of the padlock in the browser\, explaining that it doesn’t necessarily mean a site is safe\, but rather confirms that the server you’re communicating with is at the URL stated in the address bar. bart stressed the importance of checking the apex domain to ensure you’re on the correct site. He also debunked the misconception that a padlock guarantees the site has been vetted or is trustworthy. bart also discussed the significance of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and applying ‘0 Trust’ principles\, which means assuming there is no secure edge and implementing security measures on all devices. He advised keeping banking and regular browsing separate\, assuming any weird email is malicious\, and keeping data protected. bart concluded that implementing these measures can protect one from 99% of attacks. \nPass Key Security and Synchronization \nbart gave a presentation on the use of pass keys for security. He clarified that pass keys are secure as they do not require the website to keep a secret\, making them impossible to lose in a website breach. However\, he acknowledged that cross-platform synchronization of pass keys needs improvement. The team discussed the process of deleting unused accounts\, with bart suggesting that stopping payment could lead to account deletion on some websites. bart also advised on the use of antiviral protection and clarified that the free version of malware bytes is effective if run regularly. He further explained the impact of encryption on the workflow\, stating that modern computers have a dedicated chip for encryption. bart also addressed questions about the synchronization of pass keys between Apple devices and Google. He predicted that within the next year\, more websites will adopt pass keys.

SUMMARY:Keep Your Focus
DESCRIPTION:Is your iPhone interrupting you too much? Too many notifications? Too many phone calls? Too many bleeps and bloops? We’ll show you how Focus Mode can help you quiet down your iPhone. \n\n\n \nThis is a teaser of our meeting. Are you a member? Log in to view the entire video. Not a member? Join today!\n\nSummary\nThis summary was written by AI and may contain inaccuracies. \nCustomizable Do Not Disturb Feature Explained\nMike Matthews discussed the functionality and customization of a do not disturb feature on a phone app. He explained that users can choose to allow notifications only from a selected few individuals or apps\, while blocking everyone else. The process involves adding people or apps to an approved list\, with the option to also allow repeated calls. Mike also highlighted the time-sensitive notification switch\, which allows apps not in the allowed list to send notifications marked as time-sensitive. \nCustomizing Lock Screens for Enhanced Focus\nMike Matthews discussed ways to customize lock screens and home screens to enhance focus during meetings. He noted the possibility of dimming the lock screen to reduce distractions and selecting a specific lock screen or home screen when focus mode is activated. Mike estimated the range of available focus modes to be between 10 and 12. He also discussed the idea of a focused home screen for exercise sessions\, including only relevant apps like fitness\, podcast\, and music apps\, and the implementation of a ‘Focus mode’ that can be manually activated or set to activate at specific times. \nSmartphone Customization Discussed\nMike Matthews discussed the functionality and benefits of smart activation and manually scheduled focus modes on phones. He gave examples of how these features could be used to customize phone settings for different situations\, like turning off notifications during church or while driving. However\, there was some uncertainty about how to add customized options like “driving” to the list of available modes. Ward expressed his struggle with the maps app on his watch incorrectly predicting his home route after appointments\, which was an issue neither Mike nor Chita could resolve in the meeting. Chita agreed to look into it further. \nTuning Notifications With Focus Filters\nMike Matthews discussed the ‘Focus Filters’ tool\, which provides fine-grained control over notifications during specific modes. He noted its usefulness for those working from home\, as it allows for the filtering of specific apps and messages. Mike also highlighted the ability to block certain people and features of apps\, and to customize system settings when certain focus modes are turned on. He concluded by stating that the implementation of these features depends on individual preferences. Mike also detailed how to use the focus mode feature on a phone\, explaining that users can enable it through Siri or the control center\, and can set it for a specific duration or until they leave a specific location. He suggested consolidating multiple focus modes into one using the focus switch. \nTroubleshooting Focus Mode and Do Not Disturb Settings\nGill had an issue with her phone’s focus mode\, which had set several different modes by itself due to information from her calendar. Mike Matthews suggested that the Do Not Disturb settings might be triggering the focus mode. Bruce suggested that the watch app on maps contains settings to turn off various alerts and Siri suggestions for maps\, which could potentially resolve Gill’s issue. There was a discussion about the functionality of the “Do Not Disturb” feature on phones. Sheila raised an issue with only seeing the first three system filters and not the “Silent Mode.” Mike helped Sheila and Giovanni with their phone settings issues\, explaining the use of the focus feature on their Macs. Mike also discussed the availability of help resources\, noting that the newest iPhone user guide was not found in the Books app\, despite usual updates correlating with new software or devices. \nOS and Mouse Issues: A Discussion\nRobert raised an issue regarding his mouse experiencing intermittent issues every 1550 minutes\, which Chita suggested might be related to the operating system and system specifications. Mike suggested an alternative mouse brand that had resolved his similar issues. Chita and Robert agreed that the issue seemed to be a combination of the operating system and the Intel system. Additionally\, Sandy raised a question about the Apple Watch’s new operating system\, specifically regarding the visibility of frequently used alarms. Mike and Dan provided some insights on the changes in the new operating system\, with Dan expressing a similar dissatisfaction with the new system’s lack of favorites. Mike suggested a workaround involving the use of the control center and recent apps. Sandy found this helpful. \nFinder\, Alarms\, Syncing Issues and Unsyncable Videos\nFred expressed issues with the Finder forgetting its history\, which he found solved by relaunching the Finder from the Dock. Mike suggested that Sheila could add a complication for the alarms app to her watch face for easier access. Jane brought up her ongoing syncing issues with YouTube videos\, specifically certain videos from a specific user\, which she could not get to sync between her two MacBook Pros. Chita suggested that these videos might be intentionally set up not to sync\, although Jane expressed confusion as to why this would be the case. \nSecurity\, Photography\, and Promotions\nGeorge emphasized the importance of installing focus modes in security systems and receiving notifications from security companies. Chita presented the NMUG photography showcase\, with Robert Kenedi being the first presenter. Mike Kwasniak announced a special promotion encouraging attendees to join NMUG and invite others. Mike Matthews presentation was well-received by multiple attendees\, including Mike Kwasniak\, Joan\, Victoria\, Carl\, Mary\, Robert Wright\, China\, Rick\, Scott\, Ward\, James\, Edwin\, Giovanni\, Liam\, Dan\, Eileen\, and Chita. SUMMARY:A Shot in the Dark
DESCRIPTION:A brief sojourn away from things Apple on 29 March\, when NMUG Board member Mike Kwasniak discusses his work as a theatre photographer\, and shares some of his images\, recorded in theatres in the UK over the past 40 years. \nIn 1984 Mike worked in marketing in a theatre close to his home in East Anglia\, where management\, who already knew of his work as an avid amateur photographer\, generously offered him the opportunity to photograph one of their productions. Four years later he left the marketing department to pursue a career as a freelance photographer. \nThree years ago\, Covid struck and all theatres closed as the world entered lockdown. Mike used the opportunity to trawl through his vast collection of images and assemble a collection that would ultimately result in him receiving a Fellowship of the internationally recognised Royal Photographic Society. In his presentation he will describe the process of reducing thousands of images to a panel of just twenty one\, and the procedures involved in meeting the exacting standards demanded by the RPS. \n\nMeeting Notes and Links \n\n\nHandouts and downloads are a membership benefit. SUMMARY:Working with Images
DESCRIPTION:In this meeting we covered working with images on the Mac. One way to share images is by using the Preview app to markup and annotate them before sending. Additionally\, you can use the Finder to convert the images to a different format if necessary. Another option is to send a folder of images through iCloud and Message\, allowing for easy access and organization of the files. This can be particularly useful for collaborative projects or when sharing a large number of images at once. By utilizing these different methods of image sharing\, you can streamline your workflow and improve communication with others.
