A Smart home may have started out as a simple wall plug, light switch or light bulb that you could automate to turn on or off anytime at the swipe of your phone app. But Smart Home technology has evolved to encompass: Appliances, like Wi-Fi enabled refrigerators, ovens, and washing machines. 24-7 learning thermostats for climate control. Security Systems comprising of smart locks, video door bells, smart garage door openers. Voice assistant devices, like speakers that speak back to you when prompted, and so much more.

Smart Home owner, Terry White will join us to talk about his Smart Home. Terry will share his insights and experiences on his devices and uses, and speak on the benefits and the challenges of having and maintaining a Smart Home.

My concerns regarding this technology is the amount of information collected by all these appliances about our lives. Information is a digital currency, while it’s obvious that a refrigerator collects and analyses food information, it could have a credit card to round out ordering food if not now, in the future. What information is the thermostat collecting? I read the fine print on mine, I immediately reset it, no interest in having it connected. We manually adjust it. Convenience is in the eye of the user, internet or electricity go off? What happens to the convenience? Who knows what the connected information a clothes dryer collects, or a ‘smart TV’ for that matter. Nope, I keep a dumb house! Oh yeah, Except for the connected garage door opener, now that’s a convenience.
