There is a ghost image of my Applications folder that is just sitting on my desktop. Not an actual folder that you can edit. Not able to delete it since I can move the image around but not select anything in the folder. And it is not a screenshot of my folder.
The first thing I would do is start up or restart in Safe Mode. Hold down the Shift key while starting and continue to hold it until you see the login screen, then log in normally.
Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Starting your Mac in safe boot mode does the following:
Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
Loads only required kernel extensions
Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
Disables user-installed fonts
Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
Rolls back partially installed updates
It is an excellent fix for “stuck” startup bars. Often this issue is caused by incompatible startup items, bad HDD sectors or faulty updates. Safe boot will allow you to isolate startup issues, fix sectors and re-install dropped updates.
I have found this method to be a very useful tool.
Also try Option-Click the ghost folder or holding the Option key as you select that folder. You may get a menu to remove it or be able to drag to the trash.
Google mac desktop ghost icons.
