In addition to Split View mode on iPad (having two apps open simultaneously) and having slide over activated which introduces a third app on the Split View screen, you can also have a video playing which allow you to have four apps open together at the same time all on the same screen.

Well that was 2 hours well spent! 16 minutes in I learned that the tiny keyboard I was stuck with was only a 2 finger pinch out away from a full size one. Later Dan reminded me about the swipe L or R gesture to move among open apps similar to mac mission control.

Dan has a very soothing presentation style that is quite effective.
