1. Pages: a one page list of what to take, preparations needed, items to buy and any reservation information.
2. AAA triptik service to plan, save and print a route. It does an overview map and prints basic directions in large print.
3. Expedia finds available motels at expected stops with rates and contact information. Playing with date choices revealed lower prices midweek and just before a long weekend.
3. Maps of the towns/areas you plan to visit:
a. Apple Maps is reasonably helpful and shows town stores better than Google Maps. However downloaded maps are useless since they cannot be zoomed in for details.
b. Organic Maps, a free iPad app, provides offline maps that you can zoom in for great detail on streets, paths, stores, etc.
4. Gas Guru (iOS) is a useful free app for gas prices and locations near you.
5. State specific road condition apps. ie COtrip Planner. This iOS app shows current road construction, wildfire closures (the entire west is on fire), mountain pass snow closures and tourist departures from cliff edge roads.
