I can set my AirPods Pro 2 to take a photo with the iPhone’s Camera app, provided it’s open. This is done in the AirPods Settings on the iPhone but if I use a single squeeze of the AirPod stem, I don’t have control of media playing functions.
If I use the squeeze and hold method, I lose Siri and transparency capability while the Camera app is open. this feature was added with the iOS 26.5 update.
Far better for me to leave those settings alone and use the Camera Remote feature of the Apple Watch instead. This has the added bonus of actually opening the app in the first place.
In addition to iOS 26.5, one also has to be using AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, 3 or Pro Max 2.
