In my experience, the risk of software damage is low. We typically have three to six power outages a year here in the northwest, and my Mac is on a surge protector. I have not had any software damage, other than perhaps losing data that is unsaved while I am working. Some apps, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, automatically save a file every few seconds as you work. None of my app or system software has ever been damaged.
