Trying these things so you don’t have to…

OR: an enquiring mind can wander down weird pathways…

Tried a MacBook Neo experiment with the Mac Mini’s Touch ID keyboard. The experiment was to see if Touch ID would work on the Neo (mine is the base model without Touch ID). Initially, I had high hopes, the option once the keyboard was paired was visible in system settings. I clicked on the setup Touch ID prompt and it showed “Preparing for Touch ID” in a popup.

Then the popup vanished, along with the option in the sidebar of the system settings app.

So I restarted the Mac, found the setting was available, hit the add fingerprint icon.

      The setting promptly vanished.

Restarted in Safe Boot, then restarted normally. Touch ID setting was back but vanished again almost as soon as it was opened.

Conclusion: External Touch ID keyboards will work OK on a base model 256 GB MacBook Neo with the exception of Touch ID itself.

Fortunately, my Apple Watch replicated most of the Touch ID features anyway.
